"What is VoWiFi and How It Works"

Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) service has been launched commercially for the first time in the country. Mobile operator Banglalink has launched this service. Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, congratulated the company for taking this special initiative. On Saturday (September 6), he wrote on his Facebook account, "Congratulations to Banglalink for launching the Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) service commercially for the first time. The government strongly expects that all mobile operators will soon launch VoWiFi across the country, so that all urban and rural users benefit equally." Faiz Ahmed further said that a letter was sent to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) in early August to formulate necessary policies and guidelines to implement this goal. This new technology is expected to improve indoor coverage and call quality for mobile users.

  What is VoWiFi?

Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) is a technology that allows mobile users to make normal voice calls using any Wi-Fi network, without relying on a mobile network. The user experience remains the same, but the call is made over Wi-Fi instead of a cellular network.

 How does it work?

When VoWiFi is enabled on a mobile phone and it connects to a Wi-Fi network, the phone first sends a special type of authentication (EAP-SIM/EAP-AKA) request. This request reaches the mobile operator's server through a gateway (ePDG-Evolved Packet Data Gateway). The AAA server (Authentication, Authorization, Accounting) there communicates with the operator's subscriber database HLR/HSS (Home Subscriber Server) to verify the identity information of the SIM card, such as the IMSI number and encryption key. If the verification is successful, a secure IP Security (IPSec) tunnel is created between the phone and the operator's core network (IMS). As a result, even if the user uses Wi-Fi, his device effectively continues to work within the operator's own secure mobile network.

  Key benefits of VoWiFi

Improved indoor coverage: VoWiFi will work effectively in places where mobile signals are usually weak, such as basements, high-rise buildings or rural areas.

Reduced network pressure: As voice traffic is offloaded from cellular towers, the pressure on the overall network is reduced, resulting in improved service quality.

Improved call quality: With this technology, customers will be able to enjoy clear HD quality voice calls and fewer call drops.

Affordable: It will be possible to make calls using Wi-Fi at local rates, especially in international roaming, which will help reduce costs.
